Summer is flying by! I have children in school and summer has a different pace in our home. This month, my caladiums finally popped and we got some much needed rain. I am trying some watercolor paints from Ukraine with a new art nouveau inspired piece that I will share in the weeks to come.

Words we use
|
At a recent meeting of my local secular group there was a conversation about people who identify as and use the word atheist. One attendee shared that they had been asked, “are you an asshole atheist or a nice one?”
|
|
I’ve been in a lot of conversations like this with people trying to understand what words I use across secular labels. People have offered me unsolicited advice to use agnostic instead of atheist, because it seems more approachable. The words we choose say a lot, both in our own worldview as well as how we are seen by the world. It is something that makes me curious: why are some secular identity words unpalatable for people, and what happens when we use them to identify ourselves in order to be seen clearly by the world around us?

Did you know the Pledge of Allegiance that was first adopted by Congress did not include, “under God”? It was only in response to years of tremendous lobbying by Christian groups, fear of communism, and Eisenhower’s deeply Christian upbringing that it was added at all. This shirt features the original pledge that was adopted by Congress in 1942. It was only in 1954, after a tremendous lobbying effort by religious organizations, that Congress caved to the pressure and added, “under God.” Sometimes, the good old days really are better.
