Leonardo daVinci, the painter of the famed Mona Lisa as well as The Last Supper, and Vitruvian Man drawing, is also well-known as an inventor who left many sketches and unfinished work. He also left behind notebooks of sketches of inventions and, left-handed, often wrote backwards in mirror style ostensibly to keep his notebooks from being easily read. In western history, he is often hailed as a true Renaissance Man.
In a book written in 1560, Lives of Italian Artists by Giorgio Vasari, he says of DaVinci, “Leonardo formed in his mind a conception so heretical as not to approach any religion whatsoever…perhaps he esteemed being a philosopher much more than being a Christian.”
Vision was the sense daVinci felt was most important. He observed that fossils represented once living organisms and creatures that appeared aquatic could not have lived so far inland and hypothesized that there had been an ancient sea.
Anatomy drawings of, among other things, executed criminals were seen as “unseemly conduct” by the church.
It is not completely clear how much credence DaVinci gave to the commonly held creationist beliefs of his time but what we do know from his writings is that he was keenly skeptical and looked to his own observations of the natural world to govern his beliefs far more than he relied on Christian teaching at the time.
